A bit of legend...
There are several that concern an exchange between a man and the Great Spirit. Each Native American tribe has its own legend.
The Legend of the Hunter:
It was said that a hunter had gone several days away from his family and tribe in order to bring food. After several days of walking, exhausted, he ventured into a cave in search of a few hours of sleep away from wild beasts. But instead of finding peace and quiet, he came across a monstrous beast that frightened him greatly and forced him to flee from the cave.Several nights of nightmares followed, haunted by the vision of this creature, he was unable to sleep. One evening, exhausted by these days of hunting and these bad nights, he fell asleep at the foot of a tree. The first light of day appeared, he woke up rested, calm, and was surprised to have slept all night without a start or nightmare.A spider had woven a large, beautiful web above him. The morning dew beaded its threads. The hunter deduced that the spider had woven its web in order to protect his sleep and filter out the bad dreams of the unfortunate man. He returned home and told his adventure. It was then that the tribe began making dreamcatchers. The beads represented the morning dew, the feathers and charms brought lightness. The feathers allowed dreams to slide down to the sleeper.
In other legends, the Spider is the incarnation of a mother goddess who protects the children and mothers of the tribe. At first, when her tribe was small, she wove a web over her people. But as her tribe grew, the Spider Goddess taught the women how to protect the children's nights and dreams...
